Jack was the foundation and guiding force for my riding career. He fostered an educational, professional and yet nurturing environment. His guidance allowed me to progress my riding in a correct and disciplined fashion. Without Jack’s training & guidance I would not be where I am in my career. He directly shaped who I am not only as a professional but also a horseman. He was intentional about not skipping the basics of the sport while still staying in line with the current times and consideration for the horse you are riding. This is what makes him one of the greats. Still to this day I will call him for his opinions and recommendations in training. I often find myself hearing his “Jack-isms” in my head while riding.

There are few people that have made as large of an impact on me as Jack has.

While I’ve always loved the magnificent animals; the intoxicating smell of sweat, horse poop and leather tack; the joy of a colt kicking up her heels in a misty turnout morning. And then there’s the soaring thrill of competition over jumps.

There’s all that and unfortunately there’s also the drama. I’ve never cared for it; and there’s always way too much of it in our sport. Spats, grudges, whispered rumors and truly bad behavior like drugging or hurting to “sensitize” or “desensitize” or laying on another and another piece of discomfort into the horse’s mouth or on its sides or bending down its neck or whatever it takes to get the ribbon.

We’ve all seen it but fortunately some of us have learned that it stops with Jack Flowers. He’s a true horseman (what I’ve always longed to be) who appreciates and understands the complexity of the animals (equine and human) and with a gentle-heart and level-head helps them be what they can be with joy, jokes, some history and culture and always calm and helpful training and clear, fair judging.

Every time I meet someone, or someone’s parent interested in getting into riding in competition I send them as directly as possible to Jack. He makes it a better experience and a much better sport.

I can’t say enough good things about Jack Flowers and the impact he had on me as a rider. I trained with Jack throughout such an important time in my riding career, and he was instrumental in helping me achieve my goal of becoming a member of the UT Martin D1 NCEA Equestrian team.

One of the most valuable things Jack did for me was make sure I became a well-rounded and adaptable rider. He gave me the opportunity to ride as many different types of horses as possible, which challenged me to learn how to adjust my riding rather than becoming comfortable with just one horse or one type of ride. Looking back, that experience was invaluable when I transitioned into collegiate riding, where being able to quickly figure out and adapt to an unfamiliar horse is such an important part of the sport.

Jack also played a huge role in my experience horse showing and in my partnership with Remington, the horse I leased during high school. He helped me develop that partnership while continuing to push me outside of my comfort zone on other horses. He was always invested in making me a stronger, more confident rider and in helping me work toward my long-term goals.

Additionally, Jack’s experience as a judge was monumental, as his feedback was objective, consistent, and based on traditional fundamentals.

Jack’s training, encouragement, and advocacy helped give me the foundation I needed to continue riding at the collegiate level. I will always be grateful for the role he played in getting me to UT Martin and for the confidence and versatility I gained riding with him. I would recommend Jack wholeheartedly to any young rider who dreams of competing on an NCEA team. He understands how to develop riders who can adapt, compete, and succeed on a variety of horses, while still making the experience fun and fostering a genuine love for the sport.
